Key conventions...
Title of publication- is Doctor Who which is a well know TV show which is displayed on BBC. The purpose of this convention is for the audience to be able to recognize the magazine. It is in a big bold font so that it stands out and the colour is in silver which links well with TV show as the colour silver is is associated with high-tech and moon energy. The title is in the same font that it normally is when advertised which makes it seem as the magazine logo. Since it is highly recognized, they have covered some of the title with the main character as people will still know it is the Doctor Who magazine. Overall, it helps the audience to identify the magazine clearly.
Slogan- in this case is "THE DAY OF THE DOCTOR". The slogan, which is the name of the next big episode of Doctor Who, helps people to remember and look forward to the upcoming episode. It clearly sums up the magazine image as the three main characters who will be featured in this are on the front cover and are behind the text. The short catchy phrase will get stuck into the readers head and will remind them to anticipate the upcoming episode.
Central image- shows the three main characters of the next Doctor Who episode. It is enhanced with lighting and editing so as to make it stand out. There are some sort of silhouettes in the background and a beam of light coming from behind them which accentuates their faces. The audience must be able to see the central image because it is a key part in catching ones attention. The three characters are all staring at the camera and are, in a way, addressing to the audience because of the eye contact. Also, he facial expression gives the audience insight on what the Doctor Who is about.
‘Flash’ / Cover Line / Sell Line- is the slogan, "THE DAY OF THE DOCTOR." It is associated with the central image as it is placed right in front of it in a big bold white font. The colour white goes well with the central image as connotes brightness and light which how the central image has been edited. The cover line is the slogan in this front cover so as to make it get stuck into the readers head. Since it is also the name of the next episode that the magazine s promoting, they want the reader to really remember it. Therefore, it is in a bigger font compared to all the other headings on the front cover.
Free offer- in this magazine there is an offer of souvenir magazines and 12 collectors anniversary art cards but also a chance to win a Doctor Who's audio and DVD kit. This would be things that the target audience for this magazine would be interested in. The offer helps to continue keeping the reader interested in the magazine.
Colour scheme- has been kept to the same dark dull colours with whites in different places in this magazine. It works well as it symbolizes the settings of Doctor Who as the dark colours represent space whilst the random bright white represent the starts and the moon.The colour scheme makes it easier for the reader to read the front page despite the numerous amount of things on it.
Name checks- in this magazine has been placed underneath the cover line. It is to show to the reader the name of the actors on the central image and who might also be featured in the magazine. This enables the reader to recognize the magazine more clearly and perhaps the known names would increase the interest for them in wanting to buy the magazine.
Language- is also key in making a successful magazine. It needs to relate to the target audience and intrigue them to buy it. The Doctor Who magazine uses language like "the biggest event in the history of the universe!" Language like that keeps the reader reading and will send enigma codes into their heads as they question what is this big event. Also at the top it says celebrating 50 years of adventures in space and time which is the "language" that Doctor Who fans use.
Competitions- as said earlier, is on the left hand side of the Doctor Who magazine where they offer a chance to win some Doctor Who gifts. This gives the magazine a chance to offer something to the reader, a sense of interaction. The reader will therefore will be attracted to the competition, especially seeing how the offer related to the likings of the target audience, and would want to read the magazine to see how to get the prize.
Direct Address & Asking Questions- There is no questioning in the Doctor Who front cover magazine however there is direct address as I have mentioned before. This is through the central image where the three characters are all glancing directly at the camera so it seems to the reader that they are looking at them. It is to get the reader to some how connect with magazine and this makes the reader have a personal relationship with a character that they have familiarized themselves with.
Bar code, Date and Price- these details are not shown properly on the magazine. The are visible in a small size out of the way from the main important parts of the front cover. The price is hardly seen as it should be the last thing the reader thinks about. They want the reader to want the magazine before they consider the price.
