Ideology and Binary Opposition

What examples of binary opposition can you suggest from watching this clip?

One example of binary opposition from this clip is that immigrants are presented as bad and the British as Good due to Nigel Farage the politician. He showed his view that immigrants are taking British peoples jobs giving immigrants a negative profile. This created a conflict between Nigel and Russel Brown. Another example of binary opposition is good and evil. The politician is displayed as evil because he only cares about one minority group whereas Russel who is presented as good thinks that immigrants should be allowed in Britain as they help develop the country.
What ideologies are on display in this clip?

The main ideologies are alternative because the subject of the clip was about immigrants and there was sense of immigrants not being a bad thing was is not a dominant ideology. Immigrants today are portrayed as bad and it has become a natural thing so it was alternative for Russel Brown to try and rebel against this belief and suggest that immigrants help the British society. 

Rethinkin' Representation


  1. SUMMARY: The article is about the female gaze and it challenges models who are under size 6 and brings up this idea of plus size women. It suggests that the media is selling unrealistic images of women being a small size and having a "perfect" face. However, it also challenges the male gaze and how women themselves consume and decode images.

  3. Laura Mulvey suggests that the dominant view in the media is masculine and created for the benefit of men and that women are presented for men to look at.The female gaze is the opposite of this and has been recently suggested. The article differs from the "Male Gaze" because it explains that plus size women can equally be attractive as women who under size 6

Personally, I think that the representation of women in advertising is very stereotypical because women are always shown to look sexy and extremely good looking with tight clothing to exaggerate body features which links to Mulvey's theory of the Male Gaze. The media should carry more representation of "real" women because they ones they show today are not realistic. It causes girls to feel self-concious about their body which causes them to take drastic measures. They should show what women really look like as women can come in different shapes and sizes and still look beautiful. The media does not show women who are size 14 or over despite it being the average size for British women due to the "male gaze" and the fact society itself may not be as interested in seeing women who are size 14. 
  5. The film trailer is displaying a realistic view of women as it uses plus size women. It is trying to achieve a response from the audience that shows that they understand that plus size women can still be used for advertising.

Representation Analysis


In the trailer for pink panther, there are different types of groups represented in the clip. For example, there are the french, women, police officers and detectives. There is a mixture of a dominant and alternative representations for these groups. For instance, the French had an alternative representation because usually they are represented to be classy and romantic however Jacques Clouseau was the opposite as he was clumsy and wasn't dressed very classy. On the other hand, you can say that the French men had a dominant representation because most of them that were in the clip had a moustache and a french accent. This can be linked to Perkins theory that some stereotypes can be positive or partly true and in this case, the fact that in France it is extremely common to see men with facial hair particularly a moustache makes the representation partly true. For the representation of the French having a sort of amusing French accent, Medhurst theory links with this because even though the representation tells the audience in a short space of time that the characters are French and that the setting of the clip is based in France, it still can carry a negative view for the representation on French people. They would be stereotyped to having a funny accent when they talk and that they are unable to pronounce some words in English, especially words that begin with the letter H. Another group in this clip that was the women. This group also has a mixture of dominant and alternative representations. It is dominant because women are stereotyped to be attractive, wear make-up and dress seductively. Xania, the singer, was portrayed as exactly as expected. She wore seducing clothes and wore make-up and had the image of perfection. This links to Mulvey's theory of the male gaze as Xania was presented for men to look at since she was seen as the stereotype that men look for in a women. However, there was a hint of alternative representation for the women in the clip as, Jacques Clouseau's assistant, Nicole, was not really representaed as the usual stereotyped female. Her hair was always tied back and she wore glasses and it didn't look like she wore much make-up insisting a alternative view for women especially seeing that she was an assitant for a police detective and usually in these situations, the women would have been represented as attractive and would have worn seducing clothes. This is opposite to the male gaze and her character wouldn't really interested much men compared to Xania. Despite of this, it is worth noticing that at the end of the film, Nicole's character supports the idea of the male gaze because in the special event, she is wearing a revealing dress and she had her hair done up with make-up on and then Jacques takes off her glasses insisting that she looks preetier without them. Therefore, in a nutshell, Muvley's theory was clearly displayed in the film. The last two groups are the police officers and the detectives. Both seemed to have a dominant representation because they were portrayed as formal characters as they wore uniforms and were discreet whilst working. They more power than other characters in this clip due to their job and their authority and they can tend to stereotype those with less power than them which clearly relates to Dyers theory of stereotyping and power. For example, Jacques was an obvious alternative representation for a police detective due to his clumsy character and Charles, his boss stereotyped his clumsiness and viewed him as stupid even though he was intelligent enough to solve the case.

Research and Planning Task2

E4

Channel History...

E4 began transmission on the 18th of January 2001 at 8:30pm. 
Normally, E4 is known for Drama and Comedy programmes such as "Made in Chelsea" and "How I Met Your Mother."

Notable Success...

The top 5 most popular TV programmes on E4 are; Misfits, Skins, the inbetweeners, dead set and made in Chelsea. Personally, I think they are popular because they contain the two most favourite genres that the E4 target audience enjoy, comedy and drama. Made in Chelsea links quite well with my idea for a new TV programme because of the amount of Drama in the show. 

Target Audience...

Channel 4 is the top converting commercial terrestrial channel for 16-34's young audiences. This would contain people from the lower class such as the class D and E section. They would be students, unemployed or semi-skilled workers. Also, they are likely to be mainstreamers, explorers or struggler's.  They would enjoy reading newspapers such as the "The sun" so as to keep up-to-date with what is going on around them. 



BBC 3

Channel History...

The channel launched on the 10th of December 2013. The typical genre that seems to be displayed on BBC 3 is documentaries such as "How Safe Are My Drugs" and drama & comedies. The channel has had critical and popular successes, winning more awards in its eleven-year history than its commercial rivals (Sky 1, Sky Living, E4, ITV2, Channel 5 and Comedy Central) have won in their combined 25-year history.

Notable Success...

The most successful programmes on BBC 3 are Eastenders, Dont tell the Bride and Our War. This is because these programmes link with the target audience as 16-34 year olds are interested in drama, comedy and documentaries. This is similar to my idea for my TV programme, especially Eastenders as it will consist of a lot of drama.


Target Audience...



The channel's target audience includes those in the 16–34-year-old age group, and has the purpose of providing "innovative" content to younger audiences, focusing on new talent and new technologies. They would be people of the middle class section, mostly toward the D and E class. They could be mainstreamers or resigned people. They would enjoy reading certain newspapers.

Research and Planning



Waterloo Road

cinematography- 

In this clip, there is a lot of camera movement, in fact, the camera movement is the base of the whole clip as we, the audience, are following the camera and observing what it's showing us as the setting of the clip is already set. Tilt was used to see certain characters body language. Also, the camera shot would sometimes zoom out into a extreme long shot so that the audience can examine the whole scenery. The camera was revolving around different situations so that we can get a glance at what this show is all about. An ironic part was when the headmaster was shot with a low angle shot which usually conveys power however in this case the headmaster was showing weakness because he seemed to have given up with his job.

Editing-

there wasn't much editing used on this clip because it was more of a one long scene with camera movements. The only thing that was noticeable was the short clips a the end of the teacher running to the rooftop which suggests that the pace in which he was running was fast as the clips were short and sharp. 

Target audience-

The target audience seems to be for young people who probably go to a school perhaps similar to the one shown on Waterloo road. The age group would therefore be between 11-18 however it could be extended to 23 years of age as it seems that also the teachers have a part in the show which can relate to older people. It would not apply to the upper class group but instead to the lower class section as they would find the show somewhat amusing. 

Sound-

Throughout the clip, there was both non-deigetic and deigetic sounds. Firstly, the non-deigetic sound was the music which seemed to be a rock song which compromises really well with the situation of the scene making it parallel to the clip. Since the clip was showing disastrous situations occurring everywhere in the school, the song helped exaggerate this point. It helps makes things more clear for the audience so now they understand that the situation going on in the clip is chaotic. On the other hand, the deigetic sound was the sound of the environment. You could hear the children going crazy, screaming and running around which emphasizes with the parallel non-deigetic sound of the setting being absolutely out of hand. The sound helps clearly suggest to the audience that the school is not well behaved and crazy. The non-deigetic sound dims down a bit when dialogue is spoken about the headmaster being on the rooftop but then increases again when the teacher is running to stop him. 

Mise-en-scene-

costume: The majority of the young people were in school uniform which suggest that the setting was at a school. The two teachers however had an alternative portrayal of what normal teachers would look like because they're buttons were undone at the top and the tie was quite loose which suggests they they are not keen are are careless. 

lighting: There wasn't that much effect on lighting, it was a high-key lighting. It was during the day so natural lighting was probably used at most.

actors/actress: the body language of the kids at school were sloppy suggesting an unbehaved personality for must of them. The body language and facial expression on the two teachers face showed that they looked in charge despite of what was going on around them. The headmaster displayed , however, a weak look especially when one of the teachers went to get him and he started crying . 

make-up: The only make-up that seemed visible in the scene was from the girls who had too much on for school which shows that they are disobedient about school rules giving an incite into their personalities. 

props: There main props that seemed to convey a meaning was the cigarettes that the two teachers were smoking and the school work that the headmaster seem to be throwing everywhere. The cigarettes insists that the school is quite different and doesn't oblige to school rules very well. Not only that but it shows the audience that the teachers themselves are quite rebellious as it isn't normal to see a teacher smoking in school in front of their students. The school work being thrown down by the headmaster was a sign of surrender as the headmaster gave up and felt weakened by the over power of disobedience of the school.

setting: The setting was in a school which was rebellious due to the camera showing us the crazy things that was happening around the school. Also you can tell what part of England the show is set in due to the dialogue as their accents show it is towards the northern side. 





Made in Chelsea

Cinematography-

In this clip, a lot of close-up of the characters are used. This is to show the audience the type of characters in this show by simply looking at their facial expressions. Also the camera movement was similar to Waterloo road as it was turning around people at certain points. 

Editing-

The use of editing in this clip as quite effective as some parts of it were sped up. This suggests that the environment and the ambiance of the clip was fun and happening fast which usually portrays a crazy event or time. Also, it helps exaggerate the fact that they are on a merry go ride. Perhaps the speeding of clips showed the different things that will happen in the show after periods of time. There was also flashes of clips used, similar to a montage, which conveys that a lot of events will occur in this show. 


Target audience-

According to the opening sequence, the target audience will be young people who want to escape from the reality of lives. The would be from the age of 14 to 28 and it would be in the middle class section as these people may have jobs and watch this as a hobby. Also because the show, has a sense of upper classy settings so it would suit that section very well. 

Sound- 

The only sound that could be heard in this clip was non-deigetic. It was a quite up-beat sound which makes it parallel to the clip as the clip as a whole displayed quite a fun atmosphere. The fact that there was no deigetic sound such as dialogue in the clip sends enigma codes to the audience because they wonder how they would sound like and why they look like they are having fun etc. 

Mise-en-scene

costumes: The characters on this clip were wearing quite classy costumes which helps show the point of the showing being in the middle/ upper class section. They are all dressed in white clothing and white connotes innocence and purity however, the characters themselves act opposite to what their clothing is portraying so this gives the sense of people saying they are one thing and acting another. 

lighting: Lighting was also used effectively because even though in the background it was a dark setting, they were still lit alight. This suggests that high-key lighting was used to keep the characters looking bright. There was lights from the Mary go round which also brightened the scene up. The characters were given the sense of all striving to look glamorous due to the lighting as some top lighting was used to accentuate their facial features. But also the lighting that was on the Mary go round was similar to the lightings that actors have around their mirrors when they are applying on make-up to look glamours so their is a clear link here to how the director wants the audience to seem them as portrayed. 

actors/actresses: There were some medium shots so that we could see the actors body language, and close-ups so we can see their facial expression. Their facial expression were quite stingy as they were scrutinizing the other characters that they were with which shows drama and suspicion. However, they were some facial expressions that made the characters look like they have a fun personality as they were shown laughing a lot Their body language was quite relaxed. There was some that were too close with other characters which depicts that they might have a certain relationship between them. 

make-up- Similarly to the opening sequence of Waterloo road, the only make-up seen was on the girls who wore a lot which is a dominant representation of what society things girls should look like especially if they are wearing dresses.

props- The most noticeable prop used was the masks that some of the characters were wearing which conveys a mysterious character which creates enigma as you don't really know what they are going to be like on the show or what they really look like. 

setting- The scene was set outside, as you could tell from the back lighting, and all the characters was on a Mary go round suggesting that the whole show is going to go round and round, full of adventure and lots of drama. 


Gossip Girl

Cinematography- 

in this opening sequence, a low angle shot was used of Serena suggesting that she owns some sort of power.There were extreme close ups used also to emphasize what was being shown for example the invitation had an extreme close up which means it could play a big part in the show. This leaves the audience with enigma codes as they question what event were the invitations for? There was also a high angle shot of Serena and Nate whilst chuck is looking down on them. This is portrays that what Serena and Nate were doing was wrong as it was like someone was peering down at them which could be related to God looking down on unrighteousness. There was also the use of panning and tilt so that the audience can get a clear view of the setting of the scene. Another thing, there was shot-reverse-shot used in the opening sequence when Dan saw Serena which displays identification and the audience get a impression on Dan's lust feelings towards Serena according to his facial expressions.

Editing-

For editing, there was a great usage of title sequences. This enhances the opening sequences and makes it seem more professional. Also there are parts of the clip where it seems to be edited to be seen as a montage because there was a lot of short scenes put together in a small amount of time which provided the audience with an overall impression of what Gossip Girl is about. There was a bright flash and then the clip stopped for a few seconds on Blair insisting that a picture was taken so as to show the audience Blair and introduce her into the opening sequence and the same was done for Nate. Also, there was a fade out for transition when Blair and Nate were making out foreshadowing that their relationship was soon to end or fade away. Pictures were included in this clip and were zooming into the important parts of the picture so they included edits of extreme long shot images to really show the audience the key parts to the show. To convey that one part of the clip was a flash back, the editing tool of a blur was used and because it was a key and wrong situation, the blur enhances that factor.

Target audience-

The opening sequence is mainly aimed at the teen aged, young adult age between 14-23. The majority of them would be female due to the romantic genre which is included with the main theme of adventure. Some would be unemployed due to the time to really follow such a dramatic TV show and some would be lower classed students and mainstreamer

Sound-

Throughout the clip, there were many different non-deigetic sounds being played.The different sound being played in the background had smooth transitions.They were all parallel to the clip for example at the start and at the end, they both use the song "Glamorous" which really conveys the sense of the show to be in a classy setting. There were little non-deigetic sounds that were parallel such as when a part was edited to look like a camera flash there was the sound there to help exaggerate it. There was a voice-over throughout the clip, which was also non-deigetic also and it struck up a lot of enigma because that was "gossip girl's" voice and yet no one knows who she is. Also her dialogue helped bring in enigma as she was asking questions that really made the audience think and want to know more. However, there was a part in the clip which was deigetic and that was the music being played at the party and the phone ringtones. Sound was also used for effect on dramatic scenes for example when Dan punches Chuck, the deigetic music suddenly stops and a deep base sound can be heard which is usually a sound for danger or when a drastic event has occurred.

Mise-en-scene

costume: since there is a them of these teenagers being rich, the costumes worn are very classy and are wealthy clothes. Also there is a representation of male gaze as at some parts there were girls wearing seducing clothes. The clothes they are wearing are stereotypical for rich New York kids which gives a vibe of what sort of situations and events will happen in the show.

lighting: the were lights used at certain points to identify the setting which is New York. Also, in the scene where Blair and Nate are in the hotel room, there is high-key lighting used as it depicts a dimly lit scene as there are candles surrounding them suggesting a romantic scene. On the flash back, there was high-key lighting used and top lighting which shows what time of day this occurred and it accentuates the characters features despite the blurred edit. 

actors/actresses: 
As stated before, there were edited camera shots to introduce the characters to the audience and they were usually medium shots so that we can see their facial expressions and body language which would help give us an impression on what kind of person they are. We can see by their facial expressions that Dan and Nate have feelings for Serena. Also you can see that Chuck is a very suspicious trouble maker whereas Blair has an evil side to her from the various angry expressions show in the clip. You can also see from Chucks body language that he is a careless person and likes to do things his way. 

make-up: There is mostly make-up used on the females on this clip however their are signs of all the rich characters being made up to look glamorous so as to suit the setting. 

props: The two main props here that should be taken notice of is the phones and the invitations. The phones is the base of the show because Gossip girl is a blog and usually these characters access this through their mobile phones. Also, it is a way they socialise with each other and usually when there is a text message it leads on to a dramatic event. The invitations indicate parties suggesting that partying is a great part in these characters lives which gives a incite on who they are.

setting: The show is set in posh and rich side of New York conveying that the characters live lives of upper class. A setting which keeps coming is usually when two are alone in a room which portrays that there is a sense of adventurous love in she show supporting the genre of romance






One tree hill

Cinematography-

At the very start of this opening sequence, there is a high angle shot of one character as the two characters are playing basketball which shows that one is inferior to the other at this sport. There is a zoomed in close-up on one character who is a cheerleader suggesting that she could play an important part in the main characters life as this is the way she is introduced to the opening sequence. Shot-reverse-shot is used for identification on the main character when he shoots the basketball into the hoop. It was used at that point to show the audience his facial expressions and that he cared a lot about basketball as he threw the ball through the hoop. There are close-ups on characters faces when they are smiling of making a certain facial expression to display the feelings that they have at that point. There was a high angle shot of the main character throwing the basket through the hoop but it was not to portray him as weak but instead to show the audience how talented he is as he can get the basketball through the hoop.

Editing-

At the end, the clip is edited with lots of small scenes with similar action codes used as the characters in each scene are jumping in the air with a basketball indicating that they are about to shoot. Since, these clips were bundled together ,it gives the sense of a montage as they convey a meaning as a whole that basketball is a main part of the show. Also, slow motion was used when these characters when jumping to shoot to help exaggerate the importance of the sport to the characters and once again to the show. At the end the clip stops and slowly fades out into a title credit of the shows name which is a really effective and smooth way to finish the clip. 

Target Audience-

The show is aimed at, once again, the teen aged around 14-20 and the most popular gender in this case could be boys since the theme of the show is about basketball. However, there is a sense of a romance in the clip which means it would interest girls also. This would attract aspirer's and explorers who are searching for themselves and usually they would be from the E class group or even from the C2 and D class group. 

Sound- 

In this clip, the same deigetic sound is being played which is parallel because it is inspirational music which links to the whole theme of the show of trying to be the best you can be at basketball. The dialogue was sometimes muted in the clip which is a sign of editing meaning that it was done to create effect. For example when the main character scored and his coach jumped in the air, you couldn't hear their cheers so as to represent the adventure that comes with fighting to be good at a sport which is what the character goes through and is also what the show is about.

Mise-en-scene

costume: since the show is about basketball, the main character is usually in baggy shorts and big t-shirt so in basketball uniform which helps give the audience an incite of what the show will be about. Also, the school/college setting means that most of the students will wear casual clothing so there was no classy costumes in the clip which also indicates that the show isn't set in a really upper class area. 

lighting: At the start there is top lighting, which is all around them, when the characters are playing basket ball giving them the glamorous look. In the clip, there was a short scene of two characters in a car with scared facial expressions on their face and then the camera showed a big lorry with bright light indicating that it was coming at them. The lighting at that situation helped exaggerate the scene and make the accident event look realistic. Also there is a scene where the main character and a girl are having an intimate conversation and to set the scene right, there were some sort of traffic lighting in the background which makes the atmosphere in that scene seem calm and serene. At the end, the title of the shows name appears in bright lighting similar to a camera flash which portrays the famous camera flashes which links well with the theme of the show.

actors/actresses: There are many close-ups on characters so that the audience can see their facial expression and have incite on what they are like. For example, for the main character, there are close-ups and medium shots of him smiling and meditating conveying to the audience that he is a good person. The body language in the clips are quite strong which shows dedication, and in one scene, the main character and another character are quite closely pressed onto each other which indicates romantic feelings between them too.

make-up: During the basketball matches, the basketball players have are made up too look sweaty and tired as they have been working hard. 

props: The main prop of the opening sequence is the basket ball because it is the main feature of the show. There are many camera angles of the basketballs which shows the importance of the prop to the show.

setting: The show is set probably in America as basketball is a common and big sport there. However the setting is usually at college which suggests that the characters are college students and it is known that at college a lot of adventure happens which helps the audience know what sort of events may occur in the show.







Awkward

Cinematography- 

At the very start of this opening sequence, there is a 180 degree rule used and shot-reverse-shot. This was the main character looking at her friend and it showed the audience identification because you could see from her facial expression that at that point, her friend was annoying her. A medium shot was taken of the main character when she was covered in mud so that the audience can see not only see that but also her facial expressions. A long shot was taken of  the party bus in order to show the setting of it. 

Editing- 

There was quite a lot of editing used in this clip. For example, the title sequences were introduced with a swipe transition so that that moving from one scene clip to another would be smooth. Also, the colour of the title sequence was colourful meaning that there was an edit on the screen colouring. At the end, there is a montage of different pictures of the main character making silly facial expressions conveying that the show has a bit of comedy in it but also that its for young people as it gives us that "selfie" idea. 

Target audience-

The target audience, for the show is mainly aged a teenagers and young adults at the age of 15-22. This would be lower classed people who are students or unemployed. The gender views would be quite equal due the amount of comedy in the show. 

Sound-

 In the whole of the clip, there was a non-deigetic voice over of the main character explaining or the situation and adventures she gets up to making the clip more effective because the audience can relate or create a personal relationship with her as it feels like she is talking directly to them.There are two non-deigetic sounds in the background which are parallel to the clip. Also you notice that these sounds stop every time a joke is about to be said so that the audience can clearly hear the joke and laugh at the humour.

Mise-en-scene

costumes:since its set around school, its modern day teen aged clothing which emphasize what the target audience would be

lighting: there is high-key lighting used in the title sequences due to the edited colour changes. Although, the whole clip was mostly in high-key lighting and apart from that, there was not much lighting effects in the clip. 

actors/actresses:
the main characters body language and facial expression is neutral or careless or even sometimes displaying an awkward facial expression which suggests to the audience that she does not have a very loud character and so that is the way she is introduced into the show. However, the people around her show different  characters for example her friend shows a more bubbly personality due to the various different types of facial expressions

make-up: on the scene where a bus drives pass and she gets splashed with mud, she looks dirty and rough. Make-up is used on the other girls but her to emphasize the point that the main character has a less caring attitude.

setting: The scene is set in a school/college giving more incite to the target audience but also to the sort of drama that will consists throughout the show.

Representation

Pink Panther  



1. French men; police officers, detectives, women

2. For the French men, they were both represented as both alternative and dominant. For example, it is alternative because usually french men are known for being classy and romantic however Jacques Cleauseau is presented as very sloppy and clumsy. However they're are also represented with a dominant portrayal as most of the french men had a french accent with a moustache which is usually a stereotypical view for french men. 
The police officers were presented with a dominant portrayal as they were portrayed as formal because they were in full uniform. 
The detectives were presented also with a dominant portrayal because they are wearing suits and were acting discreet which is the usual view for detectives. 
Lastly, the representation for women is dominant because they were presented as good looking and dressed in a seducing way. 

3. The stereotypes I can identify in the trailer is French people because they are usually portrayed with a moustache and a French accent which is what most of the French people in the trailer had.

preliminary exercise



Evaluation

Our brief was to film an edit a character opening a door, crossing the room and sitting down opposite another character and they both will exchange some dialogue. In this exercise, we had to use the techniques shot/reverse shot, 180 degree rule and match on action. Our clip, was about to girls having a conversation with enigma codes being thrown around to create suspicion so nobody truly or fully understands what the situation is about. The script we made was very useful because we was able to clearly read our lines and use it in the final product. It also helped us to portray what facial expressions and body language to use when saying a line. Our storyboard was some what useful as it helped create a vivid image of what actions we would make in our final product. With the shot list, we was able to know what camera shots were next and how and where we should place the camera which was incredibly useful. However, in terms of pre-production, I think we would have to design a better story board as it was not used much. Also I would make the shot list more clear for us to read. These two things were in issue in making the final product. 

Strengths...

One of our strengths was editing. We had quite a lot of editing techniques in our final production from embedding sound to the clip to purposely slowing down parts of our clip to changing the colour to black and white in some parts. This was greatly effective as the usage of black and white can help extinguish who the antagonist as they would look quite daunting and mysterious due to the low lighting. Also the sound helps exaggerate the mood of the clip more clearly because if it is a slow pace song, as we used, then instantly the audience will recognise the clip as a clip with suspense. That would be using parallel sounds. We also attempted to use camera angles quite effectively. We had a low angle shot on one character which conveys that this character has power and had more authority compared to the other character. The high angle shot used on the other character depicts that this character was looked down on and seemed weak. We followed the brief and used the 180-rule throughout the exercise. Shot/reverse shot was also used which aided in displaying character identification so as to show the audience what the character was feeling. We also used close up and extreme close up to make sure the audience notices the important part on that scene for example, we used an extreme close up on the paper at the end which quoted " I did it" This helps the audience  to understand that this paper is an important part to the clip but since no one knows what the character did enigma codes are clearly shown there. Following from that, throughout our whole clip we was able to use enigma very tactfully which is another thing that went well I our exercise. 

Weaknesses... 

We had quite a few weaknesses in our production. For example, the camera work could have been presented much better because sometimes the camera was moving when it was suppose to be a still shot. Another thing is that the high angle shot that we used was not effective enough as you couldn't really tell it was a high angle shot. Also, we did not fully follow the brief as we did not have a part where someone opens the door. This is due to not having the brief with us while we are filming. In editing, we could have used transitions to make some scenes flow much better making the suspense in the atmosphere more intense. The timing of when the character should start acting was a bit on a confusion that could be slightly seen in our clip. Another weakness that could be different in our work for next time is to actually use the shot list. In between the filming we were continuously changing shots which is a risky because it may contradict with something that we had planned to do later on therefore next we will follow the planning we did unless the change is really vital. Lastly, the lighting could have been so much better as I some scenes the lighting would change and can confuse the audience so next time we need to consider how to keep the lighting the same.

Learner Response: I need to go into more detail on each of my points made on every aspect.
Sound Question (re-write):
In this opening scene, the sound creates an effective atmosphere especially in specific times of the scene. Throughout the scene, there was a non-diegetic sound being played in the background as it was orchestral. Even though, it was non-diegetic, the sound was parallel to the scene because it helped emphasize the tension in the scene. It started off as slow haunting music as the two characters were briefly introduced to the scene which portrays the uneasiness between the two characters. It also helps foreshadow that a tragic event were to occur as the music went on. As soon as gunshots were fired the sound appeared to increase in volume which raised the emotional impact of the scene. Also as soon as the cigarette is dropped and the fire increases, the sound once again becomes loud which conveys that a dramatic event had occurred. However, at the very beginning of the scene, small sounds that appear to be quiet in real life, appeared louder. For example, the water drops and the sizzling sound of the fire was exaggerated in volume. Even when the villain was urinating, the sound seemed much more louder and heard. This suggests that the scene was so quiet and mysterious that little sound that usually cannot be heard became loud which increases the tension and could potentially bring out enigma codes as people would want to know why is it so quiet that water droplets can be heard. It also helps build up tension in the atmosphere as it clearly indicates to the audience that something or a specific event was going to occur. Another aspect which creates an effective atmosphere in the scene was the dialogue between the two characters. Both character speak very quietly, especially the antagonist who whispers his dialogue depicting a more suspicious character. Keaton, who is killed, speaks in a soft voice indicating weakness which goes well with his make-up as he is made to look like he has been beaten down. In a nutshell, the dialogue helps portray the characters in more depth, the sound in the background helped create tension in the scene and the exaggerated sounds aided in amplifying the tension to a great extent.

Dependancy Theory


1) What do YOU primarily use the media for: entertainment or information? (Or something else?)
On a normal daily basis, I would use the media for entertainment which includes YouTube videos, TV and reading books. However, in occasions where I am doing research, I would use the media to find out information

2) To what extent do you feel we are dependent on the media?
To a great extent. We rely on the media, weather apps or websites, to inform us on the weather. We rely on the media to entertain us when we are bored and we even rely on the media to keep us updated on everyone's life on social networks.

3) Has our dependence on the media changed over the last 10 years? How?
It has changed a lot because we use media more in our lives compared to 10 years ago. Since media has increased in size, we become dependent on it as we feel like it is easier to check what the weather is like tomorrow instead of waking up in the morning and looking outside our window.

4) Read this Telegraph article – does this support Dependency theory? What is your personal opinion on this issue?
It supports the dependency theory as it explains that most young people have become so dependant on the internet, that they feel lost without it. Personally, its sad to see that this generation needs media to entertain themselves or to even live life!

Users and Gratification theory

Diversion: escape from everyday problems and routine-entertainment


X Factor is an example of diversion as it is an escape for people. They can watch after a hard day and forget about the stresses they may have. The show helps them, in a sense, escape from reality because they are following the progress of peoples lives in their singing career.



Personal Relationships: using the media for emotional and other interaction (e.g. developing affection for characters in TV)





In the series Game Of Thrones, you can develop affection for the characters as they are often portrayed in a way were you can relate to them. The more you watch and get to know the individual characters, the more you begin to develop feelings towards them. These types of personal relations are mostly aimed at teenagers. 

Personal Identity: finding ourselves reflected in texts or learning behaviour and values from the media. Reality TV or documentary (Educating Yorkshire) are good examples.

The movie series Step Up, is a good way for people to find themselves as young ones may become interested in dancing and teamwork due to watching the film



Surveillance: Information useful for living (e.g weather, traffic news, holiday bargains etc. )


The Accurate Weather app is an easy way for people to be able to retrieve information about what the weather will be like on a certain day.



2) The article links to te hypodermic needle model as it suggests that the violent games that are being played seem to make people seem more aggressive as they begin to see the world as a hostile place. It is as if the media is injecting the violent information from the video games into the players mind.

Audience theory

1. Summarise the two step model.
The step model is a theory that suggest that people are more influenced by those (opinion leaders) who examine different types of media. In a nutshell, is insists that media does not have a powerful influence of our actions.

2.  In your opinion, is the two step flow theory still relevant today?
I think it is still relevant as people do follow and base their opinions on other media and things by the opinion leaders who are most likely to be celebrities or somewhat famous. This is why their are a lot of critic blogs where people for example, give their review and opinion about a particular film they have watched and would rate for the audience to see.

3. How does this YouTube blogger fit into the two step model?
This PC gaming critic gives his opinion about different types of gaming that he plays. As he has more than 1.8 million subscribers so what he reviews about a PC game can influence his subscribers hence why this youtuber fits into the two step model

4. How this Telegraph article on influential tweeters fit into the two step model?
it is suggesting that these celebrities are influential tweeters as what they say will influence the opinions of those who follow them which links to the two step model because people are basing their opinions on other media through these "opinion leaders"
