Media Awards

My three favourite productions

One of my favourite productions was Incincere. The use of editing was good as there was a voice over throughout the whole clip. There was also good uses of point of view shots which made things look more realistic. To exaggerate the fact that at the beginning there was a flashback, there was black and white editing which I think  is really effective. Overall, it kept me interested so I chose it as one of my favourites.

Another one of my favourites productions was Bastille Of The Knight by Ammar. The editing effective as it was all in fast forward which gives you a fast overview glimpse of what seemed to be central London. It also was parallel to the sound being played in the background. In a nutshell, it was a really interesting video production.

I also enjoyed Major Lazer: Jet Blue Jet by Kacper. The whole movement of the clip was enjoyable and fun. There were many different shots for example there was an high shot of people dancing. The clip matched the sound perfectly as the clip looked really upbeat. The editing was impressive also as it made the people dancing seem really alive which goes well with the music.

Cinematography

Key camera framing techniques

This close up image helps the audience to identify clearly the characters facial expression which gives more insight on what is happening in that situation. This specific image communicates to the audience that the character at that specific moment in time is experiencing an intense feeling as he glares behind him.

This image is an example of an extreme close up. It conveys to the audience the feeling of horror or anxiousness as the characters eyes portray that sort of feeling. The extreme close up helps show this by concentrating on the characters facial expression, mostly on his eye area.
This medium shot enables the audience to see only the characters facial expressions as well as the top half of their body language. It emphasizes the hand gestures that the character is using which conveys what situation is going on.

This long shot displays the characters whole body as well as the environment that they are in. This image communicates to the audience a sense of isolationism as the character is alone walking in a poorly lit hallway.
In this extreme long shot image, it is exaggerating the vast amount of people at the scenery. It shows the audience how big of an event it is as the people are seen as small but in a great amount due to the extremity of the long shot.
The high angle is used here to make the little girl appear smaller than usual. This significantly suggests to the audience that the girl is helpless and weak due to the size the camera angle has made he look.
In this low angle image, the character who seems to be standing over the other character has been made to look large and powerful due to the camera angle. Due to this and the lighting it communicates to the audience that he might be the antagonist of the film as he is made to look scary and daring.

Blog feedback and learner response

WWW: An excellent blog with some impressive detail to your analysis. You are already using media language extensively and confidently - great to see considering you didn't study GCSE Media.
EBI: Use paragraphs to divide up your analyses - this will also help you write in even more depth about specific aspects of texts. I'd like to see a little more depth to your Institution lesson reflection. Finally, you need to change the newspapers you read! The Star? A Media student? Surely not!
LR: Reflect on your first month of AS Media. What is your strongest piece of work so far? What is your weakest? What specific skills or knowledge do you need to develop over the rest of the course?

I feel as if my strongest piece of work so far is the analysing the mis-en-scene images because I found it easy to analyse the different aspects and make comparisons between different images. I find that my weakest point is analysing the lighting effects on images as I find it hard to expand my explanation of what the lighting effects mean. The different specific skills or knowledge I need to develop over the rest of the course are my media terminology and to expand my thinking in finding the meaning of effects with extracts as well as scene images.

Institution Research

1.  High brow media is when the material is based on facts and the journalists are specialist that write their stories on a reliable source. Whereas low brow media is when it is all about rumours and spreading gossip. This can be applied to TV channels as some high brow TV channels are realistic such as the news and documentaries. However small brow TV channels  are like soaps because they are unrealistic.

2. Public broadcasting includes radio, television and other electronic media outlets whose main mission is public service. Public broadcasters receive funding from sources such as license fees, individual contributions, public financing and commercial financing. Public broadcasting may be nationally or locally operated, depending on the country and the station. In some countries, public broadcasting is run by a single organization. Other countries have multiple public broadcasting organizations operating regionally or in different languages.
BBC 1

BBC 1 relates to public service broadcasting as it is a television channel used to entertain people in a public service. Examples of TV programs that are shown on BBC 1 are soaps like  Waterloo Road and the News at 10. The typical link between the majority is that its aim is to educate, entertain and inform. This means that the most shows all have a way to engage the audience. Finally, depending on the type of show, BBC 1's average target audience would be working-class, around the ages of 16-50 and both female and male.

BBC 2

Programmes that are shown on this channel include things like Cash in the Attic, and Ready Steady Cook. Similarly to BBC 1, I think the TV channels aim is to entertain and inform their audience due to the educational and humorous themes behind some programmes show on BBC 2. The average target audience would also be working-class, around the ages of 16-50 and both female and male.

ITV 1

Programs that appear on here are shows like X Factor, Britain;s got Talent and I'm a Celebrity, get me out of here. Major stars that are associated with ITV 1 are Ant and Dec, Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh. ITV would be considered as low brow due to the amount of gossip and rumours that the shows contain hence it is a rumour driven media channel. The target audience would be working-class people in the age range of 15-35.

Channel 4

Programmes that appear on Channel 4  focuses on more reality shows such as Hollyoaks, Come Dine With Me and Countdown. Channel 4 has been existing since November 1982, and their aim was to inform and entertain their viewers. Channel 4 News is known for providing the latest UK and World news to their audience. They cover, business, politics as well as science and technology related news on their website and channel. Channel 4 would be considered to be a high-brow television channel, as it is in a sense a serious channel with reliable shows and programmes being displayed. The  target audience  would be young adults and the older generation. Those who are in secure jobs and are suited in the middle-class range. It would appeal to males and females.

Channel 5

Channel 5 airs programmes such as Fifth Gear and Big Brother. This channel started in 1991 and has been on air for 23 years. Channel 5 is mainly known for the broadcasting of its Big Brother series, which is a reality television show. Ideally, Channel 5 would fall under the low-brow television channel because some shows that are shown are not very formal or show journalist based fact but are instead encourages and distributes rumours and gossip. The target audience  would be the younger teenagers and young adults. They would not be in the best of jobs and may also be unemployed as they would have time to watch these soaps and programmes. They would be being paid the lower ranged jobs. Due to the Fifth gear programme, it causes a bit of an increases towards male viewers compared to female viewers.

  • Brilliant starter- grabs attention and gets people thinking. Puzzling and therefore encourging.

  • Also needed more on TV+film brands as well as Universal Music (canal+etc.)
