Ill Manors - Music Video

Forms

How is it typical of a music video?

This is a typical music video due to the key conventions that it has. For example, in the video, there was computer animation of Plan B on a chariot. This has been done to advertise the song and himself. Also, in most of the scenes, Plan B is shown performing his song in unusual places. At the begging his shown on a rooftop of a building and throughout the song he is shown with a group of young people fooling around in a car park. Plan B portrays the meaning of song through the costumes that he wore along the people in the music video. This contributes as a motif as he is trying to convey the way people stereotype young people. This music video can be considered as a spectacle due to the amount direct address Plan B gives to the audience. He is always looking at the camera and at one point he throws something at the camera which makes it look like the screen that we are watching it from has been cracked. The video has been short clips that has been edited together in a short period like a montage. The fact the it is in a fast paced builds up the meaning of the video which is showing the audience how young people are viewed and that they don't respect authority. The narrative of the music video suggest deeper meaning for the young people because enigma codes could arise as the audience would want to know what has caused this great anger from youths towards authority. All of these things show that Ill Manors by Plan B is a typical music video.

Representation

How does it represent the London riots/rioters?

In the music video, there shots of events that occurred in the London riots. There were close ups and long shots of people stealing and looting and also the police attacking these young people. Also the London riots are known for youths or ,as how authority sees them, chavs that rebelled and acted violently. The theme throughout the music video was exactly that. The violence can be associated with rioting hence the London riots. There were groups of young people shown in the video representing the setting of the London riots. From looking at that video, people would think that the rioters are bad people as it looks like the are causing great trouble to the society which can be seen from the public view as moral panic. The majority of the video agrees with the dominant ideology for Britain's youths which is that they are violent and are constantly rebelling against authority

Audience

What audience pleasures does it offer?

When the audience watch this music video, depending on their opinion on the situation, they likely to get their pleasure from personal identity and surveillance. This is is because when watching the music video, some people can relate to what they are seeing by looking into the deeper meaning into it. Those who may be strugglers or of the lower class section will be able to quickly grasp the concept of the music video. Some teenagers will be able to understand and agree with the music video and lyrics due to the fact that that is how they feel also which is personal identity. With surveillance, in way the music video shows the audience what society is like around them. It puts them on notice that young people are not respecting authority and that there is a reason behind it. Due to this, it is causing higher level of crime and violence caused be teenagers.

Institutions

How does the music video help to promote the film?

The music video helps promote the film Ill manors by, first of all, keeping the same theme or genre of crime drama or violence. The video makes a clear link with Ill manors as they both hold a similar story line with same dominant ideology of young people misbehaving. However, they both hold the same deeper meaning behind the ideology or moral panic shown. Another way the music video helped to promote the film is by using some of the characters from Ill Manors in the video. This makes it clear to the audience that this film is sending a short message about what Ill Manors is all about.

MEST2 Print brief Research

Key conventions...

Title of publication- is Doctor Who which is a well know TV show which is displayed on BBC. The purpose of this convention is for the audience to be able to recognize the magazine. It is in a big bold font so that it stands out and the colour is in silver which links well with TV show as the colour silver is is associated with high-tech and moon energy. The title is in the same font that it normally is when advertised which makes it seem as the magazine logo. Since it is highly recognized, they have covered some of the title with the main character as people will still know it is the Doctor Who magazine. Overall, it helps the audience to identify the magazine clearly.

Slogan- in this case is "THE DAY OF THE DOCTOR". The slogan, which is the name of the next big episode of Doctor Who, helps people to remember and look forward to the upcoming episode. It clearly sums up the magazine image as the three main characters who will be featured in this are on the front cover and are behind the text. The short catchy phrase will get stuck into the readers head and will remind them to anticipate the upcoming episode.

Central image- shows the three main characters of the next Doctor Who episode. It is enhanced with lighting and editing so as to make it stand out. There are some sort of silhouettes in the background and a beam of light coming from behind them which accentuates their faces. The audience must be able to see the central image because it is a key part in catching ones attention. The three characters are all staring at the camera and are, in a way, addressing to the audience because of the eye contact. Also, he facial expression gives the audience insight on what the Doctor Who is about.

‘Flash’ / Cover Line / Sell Line-  is the slogan, "THE DAY OF THE DOCTOR." It is associated with the central image as it is placed right in front of it in a big bold white font. The colour white goes well with the central image as connotes brightness and light which how the central image has been edited. The cover line is the slogan in this front cover so as to make it get stuck into the readers head. Since it is also the name of the next episode that the magazine s promoting, they want the reader to really remember it. Therefore, it is in a bigger font compared to all the other headings on the front cover.

Free offer- in this magazine there is an offer of souvenir magazines and 12 collectors anniversary art cards but also a chance to win a Doctor Who's audio and DVD kit. This would be things that the target audience for this magazine would be interested in. The offer helps to continue keeping the reader interested in the magazine.

Colour scheme- has been kept to the same dark dull colours with whites in different places in this magazine. It works well as it symbolizes the settings of Doctor Who as the dark colours represent space whilst the random bright white represent the starts and the moon. The colour scheme makes it easier for the reader to read the front page despite the numerous amount of things on it.

Name checks- in this magazine has been placed underneath the cover line. It is to show to the reader the name of the actors on the central image and who might also be featured in the magazine. This enables the reader to recognize the magazine more clearly and perhaps the known names would increase the interest for them in wanting to buy the magazine.

Language- is also key in making a successful magazine. It needs to relate to the target audience and intrigue them to buy it. The Doctor Who magazine uses language like "the biggest event in the history of the universe!" Language like that keeps the reader reading and will send enigma codes into their heads as they question what is this big event. Also at the top it says celebrating 50 years of adventures in space and time which is the "language" that Doctor Who fans use.

Competitions- as said earlier, is on the left hand side of the Doctor Who magazine where they offer a chance to win some Doctor Who gifts. This gives the magazine a chance to offer something to the reader, a sense of interaction. The reader will therefore will be attracted to the competition, especially seeing how the offer related to the likings of the target audience, and would want to read the magazine to see how to get the prize.

Direct Address & Asking Questions- There is no questioning in the Doctor Who front cover magazine however there is direct address as I have mentioned before. This is through the central image where the three characters are all glancing directly at the camera so it seems to the reader that they are looking at them. It is to get the reader to some how connect with magazine and this makes the reader have a personal relationship with a character that they have familiarized themselves with.

Bar code, Date and Price- these details are not shown properly on the magazine. The are visible in a small size out of the way from the main important parts of the front cover. The price is hardly seen as it should be the last thing the reader thinks about. They want the reader to want the magazine before they consider the price.

The ‘Real’ Target Audience- It is known that  the target audience for Doctor who is 14-30 however is was normally for 18-30's. The age group has lowered as years have gone by and therefore the stories on Doctor Who has been attracting that age group more and more. These would be people of the middle class section and perhaps higher section also who take interest in fantasy and sci-fi. They are explorers and love finding personal relationship in characters of the series that they watch.

Ill Manors: TEDx Lecture

Tedx Lecture.. NOTES:

  • got kicked out of school in year 10
  • didn't have respect for authority
  • they felt ignored by society
  • listened to rappers as they guided them
  • broken families
  • to get to the kids attention... he had to use swearing and violence in his music because that's what they're attracted to
  • Needed realistic actors to portray his view properly in ILL MANORS
  • Chav- Council House And Violent
  • Society keeps insulting kids and calling them chavs which makes them hate and disrespect authority and then the authority makes society hate them because of their actions (Vicious circle)
  • Time to aid young ones and give them hope

What are Plan B's beliefs/politics? What are his values/ideologies? Explain your answers.

Plan B believes that there is a reason behind the vicious circle of youth's not obeying to authority is due to the fact that they feel ignored by society and that authority shows that they don't care. Since Plan B has been in that position before as he was was kicked out of school in year 10 and was put in a pupil referral unit called the Tunmarsh Centre in Plaistow were he shared the same opinion and beliefs with other kids which was that they didn't respect authority because they felt ignored and that they didn't fit in. He wants to contradict the dominant ideology of today that young people are known for being up to no good. Plan B also wants to give young people a chance to succeed in life and not to feel discouraged by how the media portrays them or how authority treats them.

Who is the target audience of the TEDx lecture? Demographics? Psychographics? How do you know? How does this compare to the audience for his music/films?

Personally, I consider that the target audience of the TEDx Lecture is people from the age group 20 to 40. This would be people who are willing to take time and interest in young people so as to find out ways to help as well as support them. They may be of a higher class compared to the target audience for Ill Manors and will probably consist of reformers, mainstreamers and even struggler's. They would be the type of person who is able to form a personal relationship with characters in a film so they might have taken interest of certain characters in Ill Manors and would want to find out more about the film and Plan B's opinion and ideas.  They are different from the audience for Plan B's music and films because that target audience is more of a young group who are trying to find personal identity so that they can lit it guide them whereas the target audience of the TEDx lecture wants to find out more about young people and perhaps help them.

What does Plan B say about the media? Explain how this can be linked to Cohen's media theory of moral panics?

A moral panic is an intense feeling expressed in a population about an issue that appears to threaten the social order. So it is a public anxiety or alarm in response to a problem regarded as threatening the moral standards of society. This links to what Plan B says about the media. He said that the media always convey young people as dangerous and rebellious and calls them names like chav (Council House and Violent). By doing this, the public beings to associate danger with young people due to moral panic the media shows. Cohen's theory suggests that moral panic can bring fear and therefore if people begin to fear young people, the police will be continuously scrutinizing them. Plan B wanted to get that point through and show how the media contributes to he vicious circle.

Ill Manors trailer analysis

What are the typical codes and conventions of film trailers - what information is usually provided?

Trailers usually have enigma and action codes so as to keep the audience interested. They give you a bit of information about the plot but only enough to make you want to know more. Sometimes, they display the trailer differently to how the film is going to be in order to shock the audience.

How are trailers distributed?

Trailers are usually distributed through institutions and are seen on TV, cinema, Internet or billboards.

How does the Ill Manors trailer use trailer conventions?

In Ill Manors there are many codes used. For example, there were action codes used when you see the girl motioning that she was about to punch someone. There were also enigma codes used when there was random videos of young children. The audience questions why that has been put there and who are they.

Who is the target audience? Does it have a unique selling point or use particular techniques to appeal to the audience? Consider the way the scenes are edited together – does the trailer give away any clues about the narrative? Are the main stars visible in the trailer? Is there information about the director of the film? Is there information about the release date? Is a narrator’s voice-over used? Why?

The target audience for Ill Manors seem to be from the age of 16-35. They would be mainstreamers and struggler's who fall in the D or E class group. Ill Manors uses swearing and improper language in order to relate to this target audience as this is how they would be considered to speak. This also goes for they way the actors are dresses in the film, the way they act and the setting of Ill Manors. The trailer gives the audience a bit of information about the film and it genre. For example, the trailer has been edited in a way to display the life of drugs, prostitution, gangs and violence. The main characters are clearly visible in the trailer because in order to get the attention of the target audience, the director needed to show that the actors can relate to them as they are unknown actors. The director was also named in the trailer as a visionary artist. The director might not be as known as other directors which may lead the target audience to relate to the director especially if he has lived life as a struggler. The release date was in the trailer in a big bold font. Instead of a narrator's voice-over, there were 3 different music used which was from the director. The music falls well with the target audience hence why it was used in the trailer. The non-diegetic music will attract the target audience even more towards the trailer and film.

How has the genre of the film been represented through characters, settings, lighting, colour, music/dialogue, camera shots/movements/angles and editing?

The genre of Ill Manors is crime drama. This is clearly shown throughout the trailer. For starters, the characters portray this genre by the way they act and dresses. The fact that they were acting violently and in possession of things like drugs and guns showed to the audience that this was doing to be a violent film. There were also the police in the trailer which portrays the fact that it was a crime film. The settings also aid in displaying the crime drama genre. The settings were mainly in the poorer parts of London which is council houses and estates. There were also scenes in the trailer were you could see an alley way which instantly indicates to the audience that something bad is going to happen, (action code)  therefore emphasizing that it is a drama film too. The lighting in the trailer was mostly low-key lighting since most of the scenes happened a night. There was high-key lighting at times to show that it was day-time during that scene. The low-key lighting shows that what happens in that scene is dangerous because whatever action the character is about to commit doesn't want to be seen in broad day light. This conveys crime which links to the genre. The rap music adds effectiveness to the film because it is the music that you would expect struggler's to listen to.  The soundtracks were non-diegetic and they were constantly parallel to the plot making the film seem even more realistic which links to the genre. Some scenes in the trailer were in black and white indicating a flashback or something that has happened in the past or even something dodgy is about to occur. There were a lot of different camera shots, movements and angles in the trailer. For example, there were close up's on certain characters faces so that the audience can get a glimpse, by the facial expressions, what sort of person they are. Also, the angry besides violent look on their face suggests to the audience what sort of genre the film is. There were low angle shots on some characters to convey power which lets the audience know which characters will be the most powerful in the film.  At one point in the trailer, the camera moves from side to side which depicts that at the moment, it is a point of view shot, so we can see what one of the characters sees at that point. The movement made it look like that the character we could see had the other character in a head lock displaying violence. All of these things show that the genre of the film is a crime drama.

How does the trailer promote Channel 4’s brand image?

The trailer about the Paraolympic Games promotes Channel 4's brand image in numerous amounts of ways.
Firstly, it portrays channel 4's brand image as family friendly due to the lack of inappropriate scenes. The use of people with disability being encouraged to go for their dreams makes it look motivating as well as supportive which gives Channel 4 a good name.
Another way the trailer promotes Channel 4's brand image is by displaying a team working environment. Throughout the trailer, there was the theme of togetherness and supporting one another. This gives a very friendly view and the fact that people with a disability was used shows that they are just as well as supportive .
The trailer aids in displaying Channel 4's brand image as a high brow media because it looked realistic and there was a sense of determination giving Channel 4 a serious tone and not mediocre. The attitudes and aggressions of the sport players in the help show this determination because they show that they are serious about what they are doing. This shows that Channel 4 promotes equality for all and would treat and support everyone exactly the same.
The costumes used in the trailer also help with the theme of togetherness especially the logos. It suggests that they're all in a team and are working together to challenge the misconceptions about disability which promotes the brand image even more.
The use of shock values also helps promote the channel's brand image because the audience would be shocked to see people without an arm or leg and would be even more surprise to see them doing these sports. People become more intrigued and would want to watch more about it.
In a nutshell, the trailer gave Channel 4's brand image a positive view and promoted it as very encouraging and as a family friendly brand image.

Ill Manors Film Review

Planning

3 Adjectives- Realistic, (self-)destructive, struggle

Review

Ill Manors is a British crime drama film directed by Plan B also known as Ben Drew. He is an English rapper, singer-songwriter, actor and film director from Forest Gate, London. The script for Ill Manors was partly based on true stories that Plan B had heard when he was young, such as a woman prostituting herself so as to repay a drug dealer. Personally, I think the director did a good job in creating his vision and representing the plot in the way that he did. The film is very much to do with the stereotypical view of young people, especially those who are struggler's, who play a dangerous life. This links to Tessa Perkin's theory that some stereotypes can be true and Plan B clearly displayed this. However, Plan B also wanted to get his opinion out that these young people know what lives they are doing but because society keeps labelling them as bad people and don't take great interest in them just because they dress and talk differently to the upper class. They don't care about society and continue to act immorally. This can link to Dyer's theory that people with power stereotype those with less power than them, so lower class people.

The actors in the film were really a great aid in making this production. The fact that these characters were unknown was very intriguing as well as effective. The audience is able to relate to the actors because they are not celebrities and could be average people who have been or are living in the situation that Ill Manors portrays. Also, the actors played out they role really well. The quality of the actors made the characters come to life because they dressed, spoked and acted as people would expect young ones to. They recreated Medhurst's theory which suggests that stereotyping is shorthand for identification which can be negative and that is exactly what the film represents. Not only were the actors able to convey this to the audience but young people could relate to them as they acted in ways that young people see all around them. Therefore, the actors were key in making this film successful.

Ill Manors is a multi-character story where everyone is fighting for respect and trying to survive on the streets. In order to understand the plot, it is essential to watch the whole film. This is due to the way Plan B has directed his film. The plot focuses on 8 characters and they all have different stories that weave together as you go further into the film which then creates an overall picture of the plot. The prostitutes, violence and drug life outlines the realistic besides self destructive world that revolves around us. The way the film was presented makes it more interesting because the plot itself is unique. There are films that do consist of people taking drugs however Ill Manors tells the whole story and includes the lives of 8 different people in it. It is almost like it is a documentary hence why I find it different.

Due to the high level of violence and drama, Ill Manors falls under the genre of crime drama. There were gun scenes, sex scenes, violent scenes and scenes of people taking drugs. These were quite vivid images also, so I think it definitely fit the criteria well. Also, as you watch the film, you are always surprised as well as shocked at what happens next which is why it is always a drama film. However, I feel that the film had a depressing mood because of all the deaths that happen in the film. It can be an upsetting film to watch especially if you consider the fact that it is a realistic film and to see people who may have to struggle to survive.

As you watch the film, you notice that each story is represented by a different rap song performed by Plan B. The lyrics also relate to the different stories so that the audience can not only see what's going on but also rely on the music to aid them in creating a vivid picture in their heads. The rap music adds effectiveness to the film because it is the music that you would expect struggler's to listen to. The soundtracks were non-diegetic and they were constantly parallel to the plot making the film seem even more realistic.

The target audience is aimed at the age group of 15-25. This would be people who enjoy watching channels such as Channel 4 or E4 and Ill Manors would have a similar genre as the shows shown on these channels. Also the target audience would be struggler's and mainstremer's who watch typical drama shows. They would be in the lower class section, Class E, and would either be unemployed or in education. It would attract these kind of people because they would be able to relate to the film. Even though the age group is said to be 15-25, due to the high level of swearing, sex scenes and violence, I would consider that it should be for 18 and overs unless used for educational reasons.

Overall, I would recommend this film especially to those who take interest in reality films to do with young people because Ill Manors gives an amazing glance of that. I would suggest that to like the film you have to watch all of it.
